Copyright and DMCA Policy

Draft, not yet in effect
Draft. Bare Bones Cooking has not launched and no accounts exist yet. This page describes the intended policy and is not legal advice; it has not been reviewed by a lawyer. Before launch, a real designated agent must be named here and registered with the US Copyright Office. Bracketed items are placeholders to be filled in before launch.

How the Service treats source content

Bare Bones Cooking is a private, per-user tool: recipes you import are visible only to you, never published or shared with other accounts. When you import a recipe, we keep only its functional content: ingredients, quantities, steps, times, yield, and equipment. We do not copy a source's narrative writing, and we do not store a source's photographs. Every imported recipe keeps a visible, unaltered link back to the page you imported it from.

This design reflects our understanding that a list of ingredients and functional cooking instructions are generally treated as facts and procedures rather than protected expression, while the narrative writing and photography around a recipe are the parts that carry copyright protection. We do not keep the parts we believe are protected.

If you believe your copyrighted work was misused

Because imported recipes are private to each user and are not published by us, most copyright concerns will not apply to normal use of the Service. If you nonetheless believe content accessible through the Service infringes your copyright, send a notice to our designated agent with:

  • A physical or electronic signature of the copyright owner or someone authorized to act for them
  • Identification of the copyrighted work claimed to be infringed
  • Identification of the material claimed to be infringing, and enough information for us to locate it
  • Your contact information: address, telephone number, and email
  • A statement that you have a good-faith belief the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law
  • A statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in the notice is accurate and that you are authorized to act on the copyright owner's behalf
